Whether you are an intern, a college graduate just entering the workforce or a seasoned professional, it is important to continue to develop your professional skills. Growing your professional skills will benefit you both in and outside of your career and provide you with new opportunities for growth.

We put together some of our top professional development tips to help you navigate how to grow in your industry.

Join professional associations

Regardless of what field you are in, there is most likely a professional organization to join. A great first step is to log on to LinkedIn and search your industry in “groups” to find associations related to your occupation. You can network and learn from others in your group, and the association may even give you information about the industry or job openings.

Attend conferences, events and webinars

Along with the many professional associations available, there are also a variety of events taking place throughout the year that are intended for professional development. Finding events and conferences that focus on a topic you are interested in or want to grow in can be a great way for you to continue to learn and develop new skills. These are also great events for networking. If you don’t have the time to attend a conference or event, webinars are a great option, because you can participate from your own desk.

Take on tasks that challenge you and get you out of your comfort zone

You will never be able to grow your skills unless you take on new tasks. Volunteer to work on new projects that get you out of your comfort zone, or take a leadership role in a group project. You will discover what you are capable of accomplishing, gain new skills, and your hard work will be noticed.

Find a mentor

Building a relationship with a mentor is a great way to learn firsthand from someone who is in a role that you aspire to have one day. If your company does not have a formal mentoring program, you can still ask someone who is in a role that you admire to mentor you, whether they are in your company or outside. A mentor can teach you what they have learned during the course of their career and help you avoid certain mistakes they may have experienced.

Volunteer for roles outside of work

Professional development doesn’t just happen in the workplace, it also happens in your personal life. Volunteering for a leadership position in an organization outside of the office can help you develop skills that can be transferred into your career. Volunteering is also a great way to network and meet people from all different walks of life.

Overall, if you are willing to learn, you will always be presented with opportunities for professional development. Take these opportunities to grow yourself and your career. And, if you’re looking for a marketing partner or mentor, our team would love to help.
