Most public relations students will complete an internship before graduating, but it can be intimidating stepping into an agency or in-house department for the first time. Whether your internship started this fall or you’re applying for spring and summer, these tips will help you succeed.

Sit in on as many meetings and strategy sessions as possible.

Attending meetings not only helps you get to know your clients or company better, but it is also a sign of initiative and interest. Even if you don’t have a direct role in the meeting, taking notes and listening to your supervisors is extremely beneficial.

Hone your researching skills.

Research is a crucial, yet often overlooked, aspect of PR internships. If you work at an agency with different clients, you should begin research on the first day to understand the basics of their companies. Take advantage of your research projects and use them to develop skills and find your favorite research methods.

Be proactive.

Don’t be afraid to ask for more projects if your to-do list is short for the day. This will show your supervisors that you’re motivated and eager to learn. After all, your employer wants you to gain valuable skills and experience before you leave their company, so asking for work never hurts.

Dress the part.
Everyone has heard the phrase “dress for success”, but science has actually proven that your attire affects your thought processes. Studies have found that the clothes you wear to work will affect your self-esteem and confidence. A good outfit won’t make you better at your job, but it will change the way you are perceived by your coworkers and yourself.

Have a positive attitude.

If you come into the office with a negative mindset, you’ll struggle to make meaningful relationships with coworkers, and it will show in your work. Keeping a positive attitude will not only affect others’ impression of you, but it will make the work day more fun and enjoyable for everyone.
